Theatre Arts Research Guide

This guide suggest resources for research related to Acting, Drama & Theatre Studies, and Theatrical Design & Technology

What's on this page?

This page offers resources to help you locate information about the creation of a play for the Script Analysis Project number 3. The suggestions are where I've successfully found information for students' projects in the past. Dig around and see what you can find. If you get stuck along the way, let me know

Scroll down the page (or use the links in the menu to the left) to find information about:

1) the play
2) the playwright
3) critical commentary and reviews of the play
4) the context/events during the creation of the play
5) the history of productions of the play

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Use Google to find a playwright's website or a Wikipedia entry (as a place to find other sources).
  • Some theatres have websites that include archives of their productions.
  • Interviews with the playwright are often good sources; when you do a Google search include the word “interview” as one of your search terms; you can also find interviews in the New York Times and the Literature Resource Center database (links below).
  • Use quotation marks around a multi-word play title to let the database or Google know that you need those words to appear together; for example "august osage county"
  • Sometimes there's just not that much information out there, especially for newer plays - if you hit a wall, contact me
